About Spelling to Communicate

The Griffin Promise opened the Autism Clinic in 2014 to help bring awareness to the neurodiverse community by bridging the gap between education and accessibility.

Focused on learning new ways to help our neurodiverse friends, the clinic became the first location in Oklahoma to offer Spelling to Communicate as a therapy program.

Since beginning the S2C approach at the clinic, we have watched many individuals find their path to fluent communication. We participated in the first student using spelling to complete the ACT and watched as teens held their first conversations with friends. Through spelling we help give our friends a voice.

Why does spelling work?

Speech is a fine motor function. When our neurodiverse clients are dealing with body apraxia they don’t have control over the movements they are making. This results in both non-speaking and unreliable speech. Through spelling we help coach the body to muscle memory of movement to letters on a stencil. This allows communication to be a gross motor function and gives the individual more control when regulated.

For spelling to work for our clients, they must have a practitioner helping them learn to spell with a caregiver dedicated to learning and becoming their communication regulation partner at home. The time to work on spelling at both our clinic and in the home environment

Kick Start Program

Out of town? Need a good start to understanding S2C for your family?

Schedule a 2-day intensive program with one of our certified S2C practitioners. You will receive four 50 minute sessions to be assessed and learn the basic of S2C. This will allow you and your loved ones the opportunity to get the knowledge you need to start at home.

Follow up sessions can then be completed virtually and in person as needed. For S2C to benefit the individual they need a communication partner in the home. This program will get you on the right path to continue your journey.
